Low Frequency Sound is Creepy

Recall the chart of science's explanations for paranormal activity.

We've discussed air quality issues, How about infra-sound?

Infra-sound. Raise your hand if you've heard of it.

It's not a commonly known thing. What "infra-sound" means is low-frequency sounds, those that are below the level that human ears can detect. Even though we can't hear infra-sound, it still exists. (This can also explain pets "acting weird" when the human sees nothing amiss.) And infrasound can seriously affect a person, much like bad air quality.

For the casual reader, here is the Wiki page on infrasound:
.
Infrasound, sometimes referred to as low status sound, describes sound waves with a frequency below the lower limit of human audibility (generally 20 Hz). Hearing becomes gradually less sensitive as frequency decreases, so for humans to perceive infrasound, the sound pressure must be sufficiently high. The ear is the primary organ for sensing low sound, but at higher intensities it is possible to feel infrasound vibrations in various parts of the body.

The study of such sound waves is sometimes referred to as infrasonics, covering sounds beneath 20 Hz down to 0.1 Hz (and rarely to 0.001 Hz). People use this frequency range for monitoring earthquakes and volcanoes, charting rock and petroleum formations below the earth, and also in ballistocardiography and seismocardiography to study the mechanics of the heart.

For the more nuanced reader, here is a 2007 paper published in the journal Progress in Biophysics and Molecular Biology. The paper, entitled What Is Infrasound, is actually a critical review of another paper on the subject. Still, it's an interesting read, and it was chosen to display here because it also demonstrates how science often disagrees with itself. (For the purpose of getting to the truth/root of a matter.) And though this paper takes issue with the publication it is reviewing, in the 14 years since that paper our body of knowledge has grown and worked out some of those issues.

Another interesting article is from the CDC, the Centers for Disease Control.

Lots of Free Phone Apps

Not APP like us but phone apps, there are dozens that detect Infrasound. Easy-peasy and FREE! It's better for everyone to search for their own situation. In your favorite app store, search for "infrasound" and you should get plenty of results. Alexa may have an option but it hasn't been confirmed yet.

As far as we've heard, those are good to start. There are more highly sensitive gadgets of course, because there are lower levels than a smartphone can detect. Start with the free ones, and the other unrelated ways of debunking (the other steps 1-10) before worrying about a higher-tech infrasound meter.

We hope to hear from some experts, or otherwise find some better sources for this. (This isn't really a cop-out, as the free ones are certainly good enough to start. And apps from your app-store will have current ratings/reviews.)

For now, as best as we can determine

Update!

In another case of science eating itself, a 2021 paper asserts that infra-sound DOES NOT negatively affect behavior. PLEASE WILL SOME EXPERTS weigh in on this and give new guidelines if that is no longer a testable explanation for paranormal activity?

FEEDBACK

Share your reviews, and knowledge. Don't be shy if you have a quality contribution. (But please be polite and proofread.)

For quick comment about this post, just reply to this thread. To add more in-depth commentary, add a new post to this forum: Go back one page (hit the "BACK" arrow or use the breadcrumbs near the header) so you can see ALL the posts on this topic. Then look for the "NEW TOPIC" button. It has bright purple text.

If you have GOOD INFORMATION, please choose to add a new post rather than a reply here. That way you'll generate comments of your own.

TIPS FOR POLLS: Polls appear on some topics, if the post's author has created one. They're open to ALL registered users. All APP-written polls are set to be ongoing and allow you to change your vote later. Feel free to comment your suggestions for improving any poll, ours or others', just be kind and helpful.

CREATING A POLL: When writing any post (not comment replies) the option for "Poll Creation" is in a tab below the "submit" button. You can always edit the poll later via editing the post itself and navigating back to that tab, but that sort of defeats the purpose if you change it after people have answered, right? To start, try to think through the answers and provide an option for all likely points-of-view. Lastly, the poll will display below the post after it's published. In "preview" mode it shows on top.
